Founded in January 1994, the Peninsula Girls Chorus has evolved from an organization serving just 11 girls into a 240-member premiere arts education and performance center that commissions world class composers, participates in prestigious international music festivals, provides a valuable resource to our community through assorted outreach performances, and makes a qualitative difference in the lives of our young choristers. The Peninsula Girls Chorus provides San Francisco Bay Area girls with an accelerated music education and performance program not found in the public or private school system. It is also where important mentoring lessons are learned. Younger girls learn from older girls (by example and directive) and see just what it takes to succeed. These lessons are learned, and in turn passed on to the next group of incoming singers. We teach music, and in the process our girls learn something equally valuable — responsibility.
Located in Burlingame on the San Francisco Peninsula, Peninsula Girls Chorus attracts singers from San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Alameda Counties. The Peninsula Girls Chorus is dedicated to providing a quality choral music experience to area youth, with instruction in vocal technique, music theory, ear-training, music style, history, and choral performance practices. Choristers are grouped by age and musical ability into six choir levels. All choir levels have opportunities to perform.
Repertoire, selected to fit each choir's skill-level, varies widely -- from established classical works to arrangements of folksongs from around the world. The Chorus performs in many languages, and has premiered a number of compositions written specifically for children's voices. The Peninsula Girls Chorus thrills audiences with its clarity and precision and with the exuberance and vitality of its performances.
Through a generous scholarship program, we provide opportunities for underserved populations that don’t typically have access to this level of education. Through the many performances, our singers learn important life lessons, build confidence, and develop positive self-esteem while serving as cultural ambassadors for the community. In addition to musical benefits, the PGC offers opportunities for intellectual challenges, the development of leadership skills, and improvement of concentration and self-esteem. Choristers develop a heightened interest in the arts along with lifelong friendships.
